As you probably know Bart, 1 of the 2 Onda Sonora DJs, writes a column for The Word Magazine’s website. Last one, just published, is about a few exciting acts from Antwerp making music we love to categorise as that neatly vague term “Beats”. Wayward, rhythm-driven music that doesn’t really fit in any other genre is a better description albeit a bit long. Anyway it highlights 3 excellent EPs, from Pomrad, Internal Sun and A/T/O/S respectively, all released the last few weeks.
There’s also a printed issue of The Word out in the shops. A hefty volume with lots of interesting articles about Belgium and one written by Bart. An interview with Jozef Devillé, the man behind The Sound Of Belgium, the documentary about Belgium’s contribution to sequenced, dance music. An absolutely essential movie you all need to see. The next 2 screenings are tonight at RIVA (formerly known as Boccacio) in Destelbergen and our capital’s finest club Fuse on Saturday. Don’t miss out.
More news related to this fresh edition of The Word magazine soon.
This week we have announced 2 parties. The next edition of OUR PARTY for which we have invited Jamie 3:26, Chicago-based DJ extraordinaire. It will happen on April 27th at Bronks and will be the last one before the summer recess. So expect a more than memorable one. Do invite your friends.
The other one is something we have been wanting to do for a while. It’s been a couple of years since we have gone of the strictly soulful path and wandered into rougher territories. This has been apparent through our radio show and a few selected sets at parties but not in anything we have organised ourselves. To satisfy this darker side of ourselves we set up Mathématiques Modernes together with our good friend and mentor when it comes to 80s music Freddy Merckx. Saying we’re excited about this doesn’t even come close. Expect anything from New Wave over No Wave, Post-Punk, Dub, EBM, Electro, New Beat, House, Techno to downright wierd stuff. April 20th at London Calling is the place to be. Once again, feel free to bring your friends.
The Word Magazine asked us to make an exclusive mix for them with music related to RELEASE. As this joint project has been pretty low-profile lately and most efforts we’ve done concerning electronic DIY-music have been through our 22tracks Future Beats list, we thought to incorporate both. Compiling some of the tracks we like best from artists who’ve reached out to us through both projects.
The result is a mix with nothing but tracks by Belgian and Dutch based / rooted producers. Rather downtempo. All styles. With some exclusives, a lot of unreleased music and some more established artists you might not directly know what their connection with Belgium or The Netherlands is but, believe us, exists. We also answered some questions about it giving you more info about it all. Enjoy.
About RELEASE … . Not that any projects are scheduled but the beast as been stirred a bit and has opened an eye wondering why it should get off its lazy arse. So maybe greatness can be expected again. Who knows ? (we do of course but lets keep it all mysterious for now, haha).
