I should write a big ass report about our weekend but as I’m on holiday I’m not going to do that. It’s bad enough I’ve taken my laptop with me but I’m not planning on spending too much time on it. Nevertheless some people need to be big upped.

First of all Koen Galle for organizing the Burkina Som Sistema benefit at JH Nijdrop last Friday. It was big fun playing there. Sharing the decks with Tristan Gratts, Kong & Cortez and Lefto. Heard a killer set from that last one. Although I do clash from time to time with him over topics as diverse as supporting football teams and the politics of concert / club promoters, I can’t deny he’s a great DJ and fun to hang out with. And being a born contraire I tend to respect people that don’t agree with me more than others. Haha. Anyway great night out in Opwijk, which was , again, very difficult to find. I’ve never known the route to that place detour-free.

On Saturday we returned to where it all started for us. JH Eenders in Halle. As we hadn’t been there in a very long while it was a day of meeting friends we hadn’t seen for months or even years. Enjoyed the many talks, had more than a few beers reminiscing over the good old times we had and so on. Happy to see the festival we started is in good hands and still very popular. Heard great sets by Soul Rebel, Phonetics and Lefto (again). Missed most of the outside action because of all the talking. And we played a set that ended with Jungle. Hadn’t done that in a while.  Anyway big up to the youngsters at Eenders for doing a mighty fine job, to all the DJs, the crowd, the many ‘lost’ friends, … . And an extra special big up to daddy Fluppe and to Joris for driving me back safe to Brussels so I could pack without too much stress the day after.

See y’all in a week or two. Might post a few things while I’m exploring the roots of House music here at its birthplace. There’s a few dates we’ll announce soon. And I might shoot a few pictures with my brand new camera I need to share. But on the other hand, the less I spend time behind my laptop here, the better.

About time we start warming y’all up for our next party. The one with Rainer Trüby and Vanessa Freeman is more than 2 months behind us and the summer recess is, for most of us, history too. So it’s about time we gave you something to look forward to. And we think we’ve cooked up a really nice prospect. We’ll keep the strong points of the last few editions (the great sound, the nice venue, the fine selection of quality drinks at reasonable prices, the welcoming atmosphere) and add some extras.

One of these extras is our guest DJ. Phil Asher is somebody we regard as one of the greatest out there. As a quality, Soulful music DJ, as a producer of forward thinking dance music and as a party animal pur sang. Last time he played at one of our parties was near legendary. Not a full house but everyone dancing their ass off. Even on Fuse One’s ‘In Celebration Of The Human Spirit’, a wild Fusion Jazz classic, the crowd went wild. Much to my astonishment. That’s something only the really great can achieve. Another thing we highly appreciate is that since we’ve met him at an Inspiration Information party just before Nottinghill Carnival an few years back, he always recognises us and says hello. Even at Southport where he seems to know every single person present. We know other DJs, even local ones we considered friends for a while, who don’t seem to have that good a memory. Haha.

So we booked a friendly DJ with immense skills and a taste for partying. Seems to be our standard as those words fit our previous guests perfectly too. Add the Funktion One sound system and hopefully the new Bozak mixer if we get that one on time and you know you’re in for a real big treat. And all that for less than the price of 2 beers in a regular club as we keep the entrance fee to 5 euro. How about that.

Paul White, Ahu, Dimlite and One-Handed. All these tags should get you mighty excited if you’ve been following this site with even the slightest bit of attention. Ahu is the Turkish producer / singer  that has sung on tracks by Mr. Beatnick and Flying Lotus, Paul White is one of the few beatmakers that makes us shush people when they talk over his music, we only talk about Dimlite in raving terms as if we were marketeers wanting to sell the newest sort of toothpaste (we can’t help it, his music is that brilliant) and if Alex Chase wasn’t doing such a good job you would think we are doing the promo for One-Handed.

Anyhow, this all to tell you this is a 12” you need. Because it more than lives up to the expectations set by all who’s involved. Ahu’s vocals fit Paul White’s hypnotic beats perfectly and what Dimlite does with the track makes us use the word genius without making us feel like an hyped up journalist who’s only able to speak in superlatives. This is a truly fantastic release.

As an RBMA alumni it’s only normal San Soda’s upcoming album gets some shine on their website. Nice little interview. We’ll have him and Red D in our radio show on September 7th for an in-depth talk about their plans accompanied by lots of music, of course.

Mr. Beatnick wrote another of his essential guides. This time about Theo Parrish. Can’t argue with his words. Well written and giving you a good overview of the man’s work up until now.

Although this is essentially about the ‘plus one’ a guest can take with him, most of the point being made go for guests in general. Certainly point no. 3 has been pulled multiple times on us by some cheap ass DJs in our scene. You know who you are. Guess what the answer’s going to be next time?

Don Letts dropping some knowledge in the Guardian. This reply on one of the statements by Andrew Dubber makes some valid points but I think that how bigger the supply, the more the proportion between crap and great leans over in favour of the former. But that’s nitpicking anyway. Don Letts’ tells more truth in these couple of sentences than most do in a 20 page essay.

Call me a freak but I can’t seem to get enough of these video’s of other people’s collections. I saw Nick The Record’s name for the first time in the liner notes of some obscure compilation. He got further credibility selecting the Disco Juice compilations. Then I discovered his site and now he’s one of these ‘legendary’ collectors for me. This video only adds to that. Nice to see there’s people ever madder than me. Haha.

Oriol was one of our first discoveries on Soundcloud. Back when not everybody with a cracked Ableton on his PC dropped tryouts on a daily bases on it. Back when you could do true discoveries. We’ve been playing his ‘The Process’ for more than a year now. It’s a killer tune that fits nicely between the deeper House cuts we play but has hints of 70s Fusion and current day Electronica like FaltyDL in it.

I know there were some vague plans for a proper (read vinyl) release but for reasons I don’t know it didn’t happen until very recently. It was a nice surprise to see not only a 12” with that killer tune on it but also a full album. An album full of the sound described before. One that’s got more than a few cuts on it that we can fit in our sets. So expect to hear it a lot in our DJ-sets and radio show.

Check it out and do dig a little deeper into the label’s back catalogue. Planet Mu has been on a roll of late with top release from Falty DL, Solar Bears and more.
