Jazzy Breaks, Broken Beat & Beyond Mix

This mix was supposed to be the follow up to the Broken Beat mix I did a couple of months ago but it turned out a little different. As happens regularly I wandered off into other musical territories while selecting tracks. Resulting in more Breaks of House oriented tunes next to Broken beat ones.

D*Note – The Long Goodbye – VC Recordings (1997)
Ideal to begin with. Slowly building up. D*Note was one of these groups exploring the space between Drum ‘n Bass, House, Trip Hop and a dozen other genres. Not always successful but this track I like a lot.

Ballistic Brothers – Blacker – Soundboy (1997)
From one of my all-time favourite albums ‘Rude Systems’. Sampling a massive Herbie Hancock bassline. One of the many great projects Ashley Beedle has been part of.

Blaze – My Beat (Swag’s Spiritual Mix) – True (1998)
A big Onda Sonora classic. Been played a lot in the early days of our party. Swag’s ‘Felony Funk’ is another one that we made ours when we started. We lost a bit interest in them afterwards though. If you don’t know who Blaze is you haven’t been paying attention to what we’ve been saying last few years.

Hipnotic – Naima – Laws Of Motion (2001)
Reworking a John Coltrane track into a House version is ambitious but here it works nicely. On a label mainly known for it’s Broken Beat output.

Herbert – You’re Unknown To Me – K7 (2001)
From his ‘Bodily Functions’ album. Matthew Herbert is a must check if you like edgy dance music with a Jazz spirit. Could’ve picked a lot of tracks but this one fitted the mix nicely.

Shaun Escoffery – Let It Go (Jazzanova Vocal Mix) – Oyster Music (2003)
Back from when every Jazzanova remix was something to look out for. Heard this one first on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide show, got all excited and had to wait weeks before you could find it in the shops. Massive piano build-ups is something that needs to be done more often.

Mark de Clive-Lowe – Slide – ABB Soul (2005)
From his ‘Tide’s Arising’ album. Swings superbly. MdCL is always worth checking. He just produced a new EP for Sandra St. Victor which is more than nice. Check it.

Rima – This World – JCR (2003)
A Domu / Volcov collaboration. One of my favourite Broken Beat 12”s ever. Killer track, killer artwork by Delta. Keyboards by Kaidi Tatham and MdCL. That alone should get you running to the nearest quality record shop.

Trüby Trio – Galicia – Compost (1998)
From the first 12” Rainer put out together with Christian Prommer and Roland Appel as Trüby Trio. Proper Jazz-House. Can’t wait to hear him play at Our Party on July 3rd.

John Beltran  – Felicidad Nova – Ubiquity (2001)
Had to include a track from this label. They’ve consistently been bringing out quality forward thinking music for more than 10 years now. That deserves all the applause you can give.

Nuyorican Soul feat. George Benson – You Can Do It (Baby) – Talking Loud (1996)
Masters At Work at their best. This Southport Weekender inspired album still sounds mighty fresh.  Rare Groove House or something like that.

Stacy Kidd – I Wanted You (Soul Element Mix) – Yellorange (2001)
Undoubtedly influenced by the previous track. Far more jazzier than most output on this label. This always makes me do Jazz dance moves at home. Or at least something that I think is Jazz dance. Haha.
